I’m reclining in the bathtub with just enough warm water to keep me comfortable. My ankles and arms are secured inside “tub cuffs”, which are neoprene bands fastened with Velcro to large suction cups attached to the bath floor. The arm cuffs sit above my elbows; I could reach under my back to release them, if it weren’t for the other cuffs blocking that path. The cuffs are padlocked together via a rope loop, holding my hands in place and preventing me from reaching around to any of the individual cuffs. This specific rope loop is constructed as follows. Take a longish length of rope; mine is about 9 meters long. Ensure it has no knots, then take two ends together as if they are one doubled cord. Form a loop, reach through it with your hand to grab the long tail, and pull that end through the first loop, creating a second loop in the process. Repeat: reach through this new loop, pulling the cords again to make another end. Continue until most of the rope is consumed. Finally, when only a small loop remains at the very end, pull it completely through. You now have what looks like a braid about a metre long with a loop at one terminus. This mirrors my method for tidying up my own ropes. (I double the rope first so that I’m tying four lengths instead of two, which makes the resulting braid shorter and thicker. To undo it, you just undo the final loop, and pull.) With the bottom loop blocked by my wrists, unable to be pulled through the base of the braid, it must now be undone from the top. This takes much longer than tying the braid because the ropes need to be pulled all the way through each successive loop, and the process slows down as you work downward since more rope needs to pass through each remaining loop. Since this loop holds my wrists together, pulling the ropes requires several distinct movements, further slowing the operation. I could begin my escape at any time, but I’m holding off for now. I’ll want out soon enough, and a bucket is involved in that decision. The bucket hangs from the shower rod mountings. The other end of its securing rope wraps around the pressure control on the shower mixer. This mixer features a temperature-controlled arrangement with one handle to adjust pressure and another for temperature; currently, the setting is “cold.” Water drips slightly into the bucket as it fills. As weight builds in the bucket, tension on the rope increases. Soon, there will be enough weight on the pressure control to turn it fully open, directing the spray onto me instead of emptying into the bucket. And then, I’ll really, really need to get out.
