Maglock emergency release options

Alright, I’ve been lurking for a bit but this is my debut post. I’ve had several SB sessions under my belt, with the longest lasting an hour while seated in a chair I constructed myself. Right now, I rely on padlocks and chains to keep my arms secured. To let go, two sets of ice cubes inside socks are suspended from the ceiling; each sock has a key resting on a ring above it, plus a spanner added for weight—one over each hand—which provides redundancy (once I free one hand with the key, I can reach across and release the other).

I also have an emergency release setup: a 5-liter paint tin sits on a shelf six feet off the ground. A rope tied to this tin has its other end within easy reach, along with the necessary key. There is plenty of slack in the line to avoid accidental activation, which would be disastrous because it might splatter paint everywhere, ruining the carpet and everything else.

I’m considering building a new chair equipped with maglocks to hold the arm cuffs securely. This should offer better control over timing and improve reliability. My plan involves using two door-style maglock units. One will run on a PP3 battery, while the other connects via a 12V “wall wart” transformer plugged into a mains timer. Both locks will include a push-to-break switch in their circuitry but positioned out of reach when both hands are locked; so if one arm is freed, I can release the other by pressing that button.

Using a battery on one side makes failure nearly impossible since the battery simply runs down eventually. Now I just need to decide how best to add an emergency release to my setup. Ideally, it should be a push-button mechanism reachable while locked but placed carefully to prevent accidental use. One idea is wiring it up to a cross-cut paper shredder. Before the session starts, I could load enough £20 notes into the shredder slot so that they get shredded as soon as power turns on, making the release costly and thus discouraging its use unless my life truly hangs in the balance.
