Designing Self-Bondage Scenarios for Others... Assistance Needed

My significant other has a strong background in self-bondage. They really enjoy it and want me to get involved by devising scenarios for them to perform. I’m completely on board, but I’m not sure where to begin? There is plenty of gear available (chains, ropes, cuffs, straps, locks, gags, clingfilm, etc.). It feels a bit overwhelming; I feel like I need a solid foundation to build upon. Any tips? Also, since my own experience with self-bondage is limited, I worry that I might miss some important safety points simply due to lack of knowledge.
