How should you apply and manage sideburns when wearing a wig?

I want to wear a wig so I can go out in public. I know that shaving is one of the key methods for hiding your male features. When I get my hair cut or give myself a simple shave, I make sure not to trim my sideburns too short. However, when wearing a wig, those sideburns will still be visible. So what is the minimum amount they should be trimmed?
