This illustration shows how to set up an ice timer for direct operation. Most standard ice timers simply drop keys into your hands passively, but with this configuration, the melting ice causes a lead weight to fall, pulling out a pin from a bolt. This allows a spring to push the bolt free of its eye hooks, resulting in a direct release.
You can also use it as an emergency fail-safe by positioning the string within reach; if needed, you just pull the cord and the cotter key pops out for instant freedom.
The secret is bending the cotter key so it fits snugly rather than tightly. I used a very small nail to bend one side around it, creating a slight bulge on that side.
Also, grease the bolt to help it slide more smoothly. I went with a 3/8x6 inch bolt, but any similar hardware you have lying about will do.
I hope this drawing clarifies things well. Cindy Image Image
