simpler humbler ball vice

I’d like to build a simpler humbler ball vice.

I can figure out the wood length and hole diameter, but what about the arc depth? In other words, if you place the humbler upright on a table, how far is it from the surface to both the bottom and top of the wood? Does this dimension actually matter much?
