If you use rope, create a large loop so your hands can’t reach the knot itself. The rope or chain features an ice lock (the easiest method being two rope ends frozen together). The key for your cuffs lies on the floor—or perhaps in another room—somewhere out of reach since your raised hands stop you from bending down.
